The Verdict: The Train Is A Death Trap

Who is going to pay when public transportation goes real wrong?

Taking a train is supposed to be better for the environment than driving in your car. But it might not be worth it. Who is going to pay when public transportation goes real wrong?

Case #1: Exploding idiot.

A man died after being severely burned while train surfing. You know what train surfing is, and if you don’t, just think about it for a second. From NBC News:

While investigating the power outage, workers found Brian McClellen, 21, of Ohio, on top of the train and on fire, according to the MTA. They used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames.

McClellen was shocked and burned after a pantograph, or a mechanical arm on top of the train that collects power from the overhead wires, came down on him as the train entered the station, the MTA police said.

It appears that McClellen jumped on the train while it was in motion and was on it a while before the arm thingy hit him and likely caused an explosion. I’m the kind of guy who thinks public transportation should be free or nearly so; it is public, after all. Turnstile jumpers are not real criminals and are a whole lot better than the people who beg for swipes. But this guy wasn’t trying to get a free ride, he was trying to audition for the Speed reboot.

What’s the verdict in this case?
