Which Law School Has Two Beauty Queens Competing For The Same Crown?

Which T14 law school do these intelligent and lovely women call home?

Here at Above the Law, we write about law students and their extracurricular activities from time to time, but it’s a real treat when we get to write about the beauty queens. Making law review is one thing for these women, but a crown is considered an equally coveted credential.

From Miss India 2011 (who has an LL.M. from NYU Law) to Miss Texas 2012 (who has a J.D. from Texas Tech Law), we’ve learned that law students make great competitors in these beauty scholarship pageants. Taking home a tiara isn’t just a résumé line, it’s a way to pay off law school debt.

Law schools are typically host to just one would-be beauty queen at any given time, but we’ve recently learned that one of the best schools in the country is educating two of them at the same time.

Which T14 law school do these intelligent and lovely women call home?

Meet Kiara Williams and Erika Baldwin, who are both in their third year at UVA Law while competing for the Miss Virginia USA title. (FYI, girls, this Washington & Lee law student also has her eyes on the prize.) Here’s a cute little story about the delightful dueling divas, courtesy of UVA Law’s News & Events page:

The first time University of Virginia School of Law students Kiara Williams and Erika Baldwin met wasn’t at the Law School, or even elsewhere on Grounds. They were participating in last year’s Miss Virginia USA pageant.

“One of the other contestants asked me if I had met the other UVA law student,” Williams said. “I told her that I thought she was mistaken, because there couldn’t possibly be another UVA law student competing for the title of Miss Virginia USA. Then, I met Erika.”

Williams and Baldwin are now the best of friends because of their shared pageant experiences, but they’ll be forced to face off against each other on November 30, where they’ll compete in interview, swimsuit and evening-wear rounds. We were disappointed that there wouldn’t be a talent round in the pageant because Williams is a singer and Baldwin is a competitive weight lifter — but let’s face it, looking great in a swimsuit while still enrolled in law school takes a great deal of talent, so kudos to these women.

Baldwin wants to be a public defender, and Williams wants to be an entertainment lawyer, but more than anything, they both want to be Miss Virginia, and eventually Miss USA, and then perhaps Miss Universe.

The women said having pageants in common has made them close friends, and they are looking forward to competing not against each other, but with each other.

“A lot of times the final question of the pageant is: If you could pick one girl to win, and it isn’t you, who would you pick?” Baldwin said. “In class recently Kiara said, ‘I would say you.’ And I said, ‘I would say you.’

“I don’t know if I would be any less happy if we were the final two standing, and she was the one who took the crown.”

Aww. That certainly sounds like a standard beauty queen response, but we think it’s endearing because it seems to be true. Maybe these besties will share the scholarship money if one of them wins the crown.

Best of luck to Kiara and Erika! We here at Above the Law will be rooting for you!
