Departure Memo Of The Day: Sail Away, Sail Away

After almost a decade in Biglaw, this associate is setting sail on a new adventure.

Which Biglaw firm generates the best departure memos? If we were to hold a contest, Debevoise & Plimpton would surely be a finalist.

Last summer, a Debevoise associate produced a brilliant illustrated departure memo. Earlier this week, a Debevoise associate sent around this fun farewell:

Today is my last day at Debevoise.

I went to law school thirteen years ago thinking I would never practice law. I came to Debevoise nine years ago thinking I would never stay for more than a year or two. That I have lasted this long is a testament to just how good the trifecta of colleagues, clients and work is here. I am finally leaving to do the only thing other than practicing law at Debevoise in New York that I can imagine.

I am going to sail around the world on my sail boat for a couple of years. Along the way, I hope to take some pictures, write some stories and start a family.

Let’s call her vessel The Love Boat.

Debevoisians are kinder, smarter, harder working, and more gracious than I ever could have imagined. I am honored to have worked among you for the last nine years and hope to have the opportunity to work with you again someday, in some new way, whenever I find my way back to these shores.

Sailing away from Biglaw — doesn’t that sound fantastic? With her sense of adventure, this associate reminds me of Patrick Dykstra, who left Gibson Dunn to go swim with blue whales, or Tyler Coulson, who left Sidley Austin to walk across the country with his dog (and write a book about it (affiliate link)).

Congratulations to this associate on her departure from Debevoise. May she enjoy fair winds and following seas.
