3 Things You Must Know If You Want To Work In Fashion Law

If you’re interested in becoming a fashion attorney, here are some takeaways you can use to get a better understanding of the industry before you dive in.

Last week, Above the Law hosted a Fashion Law Forum in New York City at Carson Street Clothiers. The event was very well-attended — in fact, we hosted a standing-room only crowd. Everyone was dressed to the nines, and we couldn’t have been happier with how this salon-style soiree turned out. As noted on Carson Street’s blog, “For a night of discussion with a rather serious intention, there were plenty of laughs and personable anecdotes shared with a more than attentive audience.”

The highlight of the evening was a lively discussion, moderated by ATL Editor Staci Zaretsky, about all of the ins and outs of fashion law. Panelists included Barbara Kolsun, General Counsel of Stuart Weitzman; Jennifer Sheaffer, VP, Associate General Counsel of J.Crew Group; Michael Lasky, Co-Chair of the Litigation Practice Group of Davis & Gilbert; and Sherry Jetter, Special Counsel of Katten Muchin Rosenman.

If you’re interested in becoming a fashion attorney, here are some takeaways from our esteemed panelists that you can use to get a better understanding of the industry before you dive in.

1. If you’re working in a law firm and hoping to attract fashion industry clients to your practice, you’ll be much more successful if you follow Mike Lasky’s advice. Always be practical and responsive, and most importantly, set your hours and fees so that they’re proportional to the task at hand.

2. Not everything about fashion law is as glamorous as it’s made out to be. From “fat” models (i.e., models who are a size 4) to bed bugs, you’ll be dealing with many issues that you may not have thought you’d ever encounter in practice.

3. Networking is the key to finding the right job in the fashion industry. Whoever you meet, make sure you keep in touch with them and remain on good terms, because you never know who will offer you a helping hand in the future.
