Job of the Week: General Counsel Position in South Florida

Special Counsel has an exclusive search for a General Counsel on behalf its client, a major player in the global music entertainment industry in South Florida. This is a unique opportunity to work in an exciting, fast-paced industry. The ideal candidate will have at least five (5) years of substantive legal experience in the music entertainment industry, combined with prior business experience. Experience in public relations, media relations, community relations, and crisis management is helpful.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for overall legal strategy domestically and internationally while managing day-to-day legal operations, including general contracting and commercial law, corporate governance, risk management, insurance, intellectual property, licensing and litigation management.
  • Negotiate, structure, and draft a variety of commercial and other entertainment related agreements, including artist, performer, talent agreements, music, digital and technology related agreements, music publishing, and music licensing agreements, blanket license agreements and other matters related to music and multimedia productions
  • Oversee and manage public relations, media relations and handling crisis management matters
  • Provide counsel to the executive team and owners on a range of compliance, risk management and corporate governance matters
  • Guide the development of corporate policies and procedures
  • Providing day-to-day legal guidance to a network of multinational event organizers and across all business functions, including sales, business development, marketing, human resources, litigation, and intellectual property for domestic and international operations.
  • Review, draft and negotiate a broad range of complex agreements by working collaboratively with business and functional teams
  • Provide legal and clearance support in executing all third party clearance documentation related to media and marketing initiatives (including composer agreements, master use licenses, synchronization licenses, mechanical licenses and live event rights)
  • Keep abreast of legal and regulatory changes that may affect the company and its strategic goals.
  • Ensure company compliance with all applicable U.S. and foreign laws and regulations.
  • Direct the legal, corporate governance and compliance-related efforts and develop appropriate systems to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Manage legal disputes with third parties  as well as outside litigation resources, as necessary
  • Oversee risk management and advise the Executive team on risk management strategies to be implemented.
  • Advise human resources department with workplace policies, compliance, and investigations
  • Supervise legal staff

Job Requirements:

  • J.D. and active licensure in any state
  • At least five (5) years of relevant legal experience
  • Direct in-house experience in the music entertainment industry
  • Prior business experience
  • Exceptional contract drafting, negotiation and communication skills; ability to convey legal advice clearly and effectively
  • Superior legal and practical judgment with strong problem solving skills
  • Results-oriented, with a high sense of urgency and excellent time management skills
  • High degree of flexibility with availability to assess and resolve legal issues that may arise
  • Highly motivated self-starter with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects in a high volume without sacrificing the quality of work product
  • Ability to independently prioritize dynamic workload and effectively meet deadlines in a fast paced environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills & the ability to work effectively with employees at all levels in a creative and non-traditional office environment
