Law School Exposed To Tuberculosis

Important health update for some of you.

No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avatar and its seal –the redness and the horror of blood. There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution.

The Masque of the Red Death, by Edgar Allan Poe.

OK, everyone panic! No, actually don’t, because TB is the sort of disease that we can control in the 21st Century if it’s rooted out and dealt with early. Most importantly, it’s not one of those diseases a Republican can tell you not to get vaccinated over. There’s a straightforward test followed by a regimen of drugs. Actually, that explains the bar exam too.

Anyway, University of Detroit-Mercy students and faculty got an alarming message yesterday afternoon explaining that they’re all coming down with Consumption:

I am writing to let you know that we have been notified that there may have been exposure to Tuberculosis (TB) within the UDM Law community. We are following the guidance and direction provided by the local public health authorities to notify members of our community who have been in close contact with the individual.

As one might imagine, since this message is going out to neurotic lawyers, it required some immediate damage control:

This is a quick follow up to emphasize two points. 1. You will be notified if you need to be tested. 2. The law school is a safe place to come to, to study, to be in classes, etc.

It is located in Detroit, so I’m not so sure about number 2.

So if you’re at UDM — keep calm and get tested if and only if you get notified. And everyone else, just take a second to say, “Law school may be awful, but at least I’m not coming down with the plague.”

The complete initial announcement is on the next page…
