Can Tech Disrupt The Legal Industry? A Conversation With UpCounsel CEO Matt Faustman

Many businesses have no simple way of finding reasonably priced attorneys they can trust. That's where UpCounsel comes in...

I always get excited to talk with entrepreneurs who left their cushy Biglaw salaries to start their own companies, and today I am glad to be joined by Matt Faustman, the CEO of UpCounsel. Before starting UpCounsel, Matt did a quick stint in Biglaw at Latham & Watkins, so he knows your pain. But he also understood another pain point that most Biglaw attorneys understand: the legal industry is ripe for disruption. Many businesses have no simple way of finding reasonably priced attorneys they can trust. And, on the other hand, many attorneys would love to leave their big firms for smaller firms or to start their own practices, but do not make the move because the task seems too daunting. UpCounsel is solving both problems at once by creating an online marketplace to connect businesses and attorneys. The company’s service is already available in New York, Texas, California, and Massachusetts — and was just recently launched in Illinois.

I am hoping to learn more about Matt and his journey, as well as how he sees the future of the legal industry.
