Stat Of The Week: The Biglaw Billables Champion

Which Biglaw firm boasts a lawyer who billed 71 hours a week last year?

Earlier this week came the release of the annual Am Law 100 rankings, and the news was arguably good: gross revenue, revenue per lawyer, and profits per partner were all up industrywide. Accompanying the publication of its major rankings tables, The American Lawyer also produced a pretty cool slideshow (sub. req.) that teased out some interesting data points on a variety of Biglaw financial metrics, including firms with more than $2 billion in revenue, the highest and lowest PPP, and the widest spread between PPP and profits per lawyer.

Buried toward the back of the slideshow, Am Law identifies the firm which billed the highest total number of hours (DLA Piper, with the equivalent of 650 years of billed time in 2014) and the firm of the individual lawyer with the highest total. Believe it or not, one anonymous attorney at Venable logged a mind-boggling 3,687 hours.
