2L Embarrassed On Late Night TV

A 2L at what law school acted a fool on late night TV?

(Update: Scroll to the bottom to check out the reaction from the law student featured on Jimmy Kimmel.) The late night talk show wars have entered a new generation, with the battle of the Jimmys taking center stage. The collateral damage has now claimed a UCLA rising 2L who apparently doesn’t watch a lot of sports, but really wants to seem as though he does.

The Jimmy Kimmel bit is a staple of late night comedy, asking the public a question with a flawed premise, then watching stupidity and a desire to please come together to create comedy gold.

The question asked of our unwitting law school star was:

Were you blown away by the Clippers’ amazing comeback during game 8 against the Rockets?

First of all, in the playoffs, sports series don’t go to 8 games — because ties are un-American and also because declaring a winner is a key element to crowning a champion. You can tell 2L was just so keyed up to answer the question, he wasn’t really listening to the question. And you know, the Clippers were eliminated from the playoffs two weeks prior. Way to keep the faith alive, LA fans.

Then our budding TV star volunteers, apropos of nothing, that he is a law student at UCLA, responding to the question, “Where did you watch the game?” That’s gunner 101: answer the question that is asked, not the one you want to answer.

Update 6/9/15 1:25pm: We’ve heard from the law student in question, and there’s good news! He has a sense of humor.

As the law student I can frankly say I was not embarrassed. I found the questions hilarious – they asked what I thought about the team motto “all men must die”. I should have said Valar Dohaeris (in response to Valar Morghulis, which is the phrase from Game of Thrones). I knew the jig was up and had myself a laugh. Learn to find some humor in life, ya?

I’m glad he can laugh about the incident. Unfortunately, due to the wonders of editing the fact that he caught on to the joke was never revealed. At least he’ll always have great memories of that epic Game 8.
