CNN Rouses The Ire Of The Supreme Court

A CNN intern runs into a snafu involving SCOTUS and a GoPro.

The Supreme Court of the United States has some pretty arcane rules, the most controversial of which is the prohibition on cameras in the courtroom. It’s a fact that has been well-covered, and has even spawned its own traditions. Most notable is the “running of the interns,” where interns embedded in the courtroom for the announcement of decisions rush outside to let the on-air talent know exactly what has been decided.

It’s a game of telephone cross-bred with a sprint that seems especially strange in an era of instantaneous communication, when everyone carries recording devices everywhere they go, but when SCOTUS makes a rule, you follow it (especially if you fancy your press credentials).

And when they say, “no cameras in the courtroom” that includes a GoPro.

As Politico reports, it seems that yesterday, a CNN intern had a little snafu following that particular rule. See, the CNN intern was assigned to listen to the decision and then relay it back to the talent, standard enough, but earlier in the day, the unlucky intern had been assigned to wear a GoPro for another assignment and inadvertently left the camera running when he began his SCOTUS duties. No bueno.

When the camera was found, several interns were temporarily removed from the press room while things were sorted out. The intern shut off the camera and was allowed re-entry.

In a statement to Politico, CNN said:

In a statement, CNN said that the intern “misunderstood the rules about recording inside the Supreme Court’s Public Information Office and acted inappropriately. We’ve taken the necessary action to remedy this situation. We profusely apologize to the Court.”

No half-assed apology here, and that’s a great sign… let’s just hope that when the smoke clears, the poor intern still has a job.
