Listen To Justice Ginsburg Hosting A Radio Show Right Here

Justice Ginsburg hosts a radio show on opera. If she stays awake, we know that opera is more entertaining than Obama's State of the Union.

As we previewed last week, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is guest hosting a radio show today at 11 a.m. Eastern to teach us all about “Opera and the Law,” and you can listen to it streaming right here:

If you missed the show live, don’t worry — highlights are below. And if you want to follow along live, be sure to refresh this page to catch updates as they happen.

11:15 a.m.: Justice Ginsburg has us listening to a piece about a medium conning people with the promise of talking to their dead kids. So if you took the under on how quickly it would take to get morbid, good for you.

11:20 a.m.: Justice Ginsburg describes her stewardship of the concert series as “taking the baton from [Justice O’Connor].” Why doesn’t the Judiciary Committee ask questions about this at confirmation hearings?

11:31 a.m.: “Opera presents certain difficulties for a feminist.” This is an understatement. Talk about a genre failing the Bechdel Test.

11:42 a.m.: SCALIA/GINSBURG! Notorious RBG says she kicked off her summer “opera odyssey” with the world premiere of the opera about her friendship with Justice Scalia.

11:46 a.m.: Philip Glass? How the hell can she stay awake through Philip Glass?

11:48 a.m.: Let’s talk Scalia/Ginsburg a bit. Justice Ginsburg genuinely enjoys the piece and even gives a rendition of Justice Scalia’s “Rage Aria.” It’s a great piece — right up there with Call Me Maybe.

11:53 a.m.: The last piece is called “Anita’s Story.” Oh please be about Anita Hill.

11:54 a.m.: Wow. Operatic use of the phrase “gender based discrimination.” What the hell is going on?

12:08 p.m.: Justice Ginsburg has a selection of opera pieces that portray justice, which is like looking to Game of Thrones for honest negotiation.

12:18 p.m.: Apparently the secret to scoring a clerkship with Justice Ginsburg is making a joke about opera — she hired one on the spot for doing it once. File that one away, kids!

12:19 p.m.: For the principle that contracts should be upheld, Justice Ginsburg rolls with Wagner’s Ring cycle. I was joking with the Game of Thrones reference earlier.

12:26 p.m.: Billy Budd time. She describes in length that this is based on Melville’s work. Why isn’t there a Bartleby opera? Someone get on that.

Unless you’d prefer not to.

12:31 p.m.: Billy Budd transitioned into some sly commentary on Kim Davis.

12:33 p.m.: We take a break from opera for Justice Ginsburg to rehash her dissent in Glossip. This was supposed to be a set up for the piece, but now the piece will seem awkwardly out of place.

12:45 p.m.: Gilbert & Sullivan gets the nod to troll strict constructionists.

12:54 p.m.: And that’s it! An enjoyable couple hours of music. Hope you all enjoyed it.
