Nationwide Layoff Watch: Law Firm Suddenly Leaves 150+ Jobless

Which firm was the one to conduct these massive surprise layoffs?

When law firm layoffs come suddenly and unexpectedly, they can leave complete catastrophes in their wake. What’s a lawyer to do when he learns that his job has disappeared overnight? Unfortunately, many legal professionals are currently dealing with this terrible news.

Large firms have been in the habit of conducting surprise layoffs en masse lately, and that is exactly what happened at this Florida real-estate firm, known for its once successful foreclosure practice.

Employees received notice this week that the Law Offices of Daniel C. Consuegra, a Tampa-based firm, will lay off 154 workers and permanently close its affiliated title business. As you may recall, the firm was one of three to be investigated by the Florida Attorney General’s Office at the height of the massive robo-signing scandal in 2011.

The Tampa Bay Business Journal has the scoop on the layoffs:

The permanent layoffs are expected to happen in late November. The firm notified the state of Florida of the layoffs this week through a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN letter.

The title company will close entirely, according to the letter, and 28 employees there will be affected beginning Nov. 30. Consuegra Title was incorporated in 2012, according to the Florida Department of State Division of Corporations.

The law firm’s practice areas include commercial litigation, mortgage default, collections, replevins and repossessions, bankruptcy and real estate, according to its website. It was incorporated in 2007.

The law offices will not close, according to the letter.

As noted by the ABA Journal, it’s not clear what positions are affected by these layoffs.

This is the third firm with a struggling foreclosure practice to conduct layoffs or close without prior warning this year. Butler & Hosch left about 700 lawyers and legal professionals jobless when it shuttered in May, and Zucker Goldberg & Ackerman laid off almost 300 employees before it shut down in June.
