Stat Of The Week: Merger Mania

A record year for law firm combinations?

2015 has been a banner year for mergers, with volume reaching levels not seen since 2007. And as Corporate America goes, Biglaw follows: this year will likely be a record-setting one for law firm tie-ups. (Or, at least, the highest number since Altman Weil began keeping track of law firm mergers nine years ago.)

According to Altman Weil, this trend is a reflection of “overall optimism about the economy and financial stability within many firms.” On the other hand, cynics might say something about a bunch of rocks hugging each other tight hoping they won’t sink.

Either way, through the third quarter of 2015, 68 law firm mergers have been reported. And of course we are waiting with bated breath for Pillsbury and Chadbourne to pull the trigger already.
