Alan Dershowitz Loses His Sh*t Over Student Protestors

Dershowitz comes across like a crotchety old man (probs true) who'd rather these pesky kids get off his lawn than have to adjust the way he has always conceived of the world.

We live in troubled times. There’s terrorism, a war against an unknown enemy, a refugee crisis — and that’s before we touch on the bevy of domestic issues.

Currently topping the list of domestic turmoil is racism on college campuses. Ever since the Mizzou football team decided to (rightfully) take advantage of the publicity they get as a result of their college’s and the NCAA’s use of them as free labor in order to demand action over racialized incidents on campus, it has been a hot button issue. And with hot buttons come hot takes. It seems Harvard Law professor, Alan Dershowitz can’t help but wade into the morass.

You’d think that given his history of civil rights work, the Dersh might understand the utility and necessity of the student protests sweeping campuses. You’d be wrong. In his comments to Business Insider on the subject, Dershowitz comes across like a crotchety old man (probs true) who’d rather these pesky kids get off his lawn than have to adjust the way he has always conceived of the world:

“The last thing these students want is diversity,” Dershowitz told Business Insider.
“They may want superficial diversity, because for them diversity is a code word for ‘more of us.’ They don’t want more conservatives, they don’t want more white students, they don’t want more heterosexuals.”

I must have missed the memo about the staggering lack of white students in academia. And apparently heterosexuals are a dying breed. You’d think Fox News would be on top of that. You had one job Fox News (to stir up misplaced white racial panic), and you failed. Nice going.

But Dershowitz counters that students don’t want actual diversity on campus.

“I think the most important thing to point out is the double standard and the hypocrisy,” Dershowitz said. “These are students who want safe spaces for themselves but not for others. They’re prepared to spit on people going out of lectures.”

Dershowitz is referring an incident after a free-speech conference at Yale earlier this month in which several attendees were spat on and called racist, people who went to the conference told the Yale Daily News. One minority student who attended the conference told the YDN he was called a traitor.

Listen, I think spitting on someone is gross. But probably less gross than a swastika made out of poop. There are a lot of complex issues and incidents that are shaping the anger that is being exhibited on college campuses and failing to dig into any of the details and still spouting off on them does a deep disservice to the cause of racial justice.
