Is Amal Clooney Starting A New Fashion Trend For Lawyers?

Amal Clooney is making a bold fashion choice, but will it take off in Biglaw?

Ah, Amal Clooney. The always stylish and subtly understated icon is making plans to launch an all-new fashion statement, and it has everything to do with her job.

According to the Mirror and its sources, the human rights lawyer is looking to downgrade her ginormous engagement ring, gifted to her by the one and only George Clooney:

Amal Clooney is on the hunt for a new engagement ring – because her current £450k [$750,000] sparkler is too bling.

The human rights lawyer, 37, has been shopping in posh jewellers Cartier for a platinum band which will replace her emerald cut diamond ring when she is working on serious court cases.

It certainly makes sense that in the midst of a case about the tragedies of the Armenian genocide it would be a bit… gauche to be blinding the room with your bling.

A source said: “Amal has told friends she wants a more understated engagement ring specifically for when she’s working on serious cases.

“People constantly stop her and admire it for a closer look. It is a massive rock and there is no hiding it.

“She absolutely loves the ring and won’t be getting rid of it but she just wants something simpler for her big cases.”

Don’t worry, she isn’t ditching the rock altogether, just getting a simpler (though undoubtedly still expensive) look for work. Smart move all the way around, but I don’t see this taking off in America — at least not in Biglaw. That’s an environment that rewards the markers of a good life — bespoke suits, Italian shoes, leather attaché cases, and other goodies you can buy with Biglaw bonus money — so don’t expect shiny diamonds to make an exit.
