Associate Bonus Watch: Lots Of Cash For The Biggest Billers

Would these extra bundles of cash incentivize you to burn even more midnight oil than you already are?

Many Biglaw firms have matched the market for their year-end bonuses this holiday season, but thus far, only a handful of them have offered up extra bonus bucks for their biggest billers.

Would these extra bundles of cash incentivize you to burn even more midnight oil than you already are?

Perhaps that’s what these large law firms are hoping for, since they seem ready, willing, and able to help their associates make even more money, hand over fist (at least when it comes to bonuses; unfortunately, it seems that starting salaries are a different beast entirely).

Which firm is offering its associates fat stacks of cash for billing extra hours this time?

The answer to that question is the obscenely profitable litigation powerhouse, Quinn Emanuel. Its bonuses will be paid tomorrow, with the caveat that those who billed more than 1900 hours, but fewer than 2100 hours, will receive less that what is listed on the bonus matrix below. It’s certainly worth noting that the bonus dollars that will be handed out for those who billed hours ranging from 2400-2699 and 2700 and above are even bigger than last year’s scale. Check out the 2015 Quinn Emanuel bonus matrix:

If you’ve billed fewer than 2100 hours, and you’re looking for guidance as to what kind of bonus you may receive tomorrow, last year’s matrix may be helpful for you. (Plus, you can also see how much better bonuses were for high billers in 2015 over 2014.)

A market bonus match is nothing to sneeze at, but these bonuses for going above and beyond the call of duty while billing are pretty awesome. Maybe next time the firm pays you to go away, you’ll be able to spring for an even more exciting trip. Congrats!
