A law student's heartbreak goes viral.

Technology has become such a ubiquitous part of our life that we barely even notice it. Sure, senior partner, I can be reached at 11:59 p.m. on a Saturday. Just text or email if you need anything. But sometimes there are unusual side effects to our technological crutch.

Take the case of Koby Soto. He’s a law student in Tel-Aviv and was blissfully dating a fellow law student all while wearing his trusty Fitbit. Then he received a phone call that would change everything. Buzzfeed reports:

On Saturday, he and his then-boyfriend of a few months, a fellow law student, were planning to take the night off from cramming for exams.
Then Soto got a call from his boyfriend. “He said that we’re going to have to cancel, and I said ‘Why?’ and he said, ‘Things are not working as they should,’” Soto recalled in an interview with BuzzFeed News. “I said, ‘Are you serious? You’re doing this over the phone?’”

Sad enough story, but one that’s all too typical — law school takes its toll on even the best of relationships. But Soto was wearing that damn Fitbit, and then he tweeted out a screen shot of the data.

It’s disconcerting to see one’s emotional state played out in chart form. But, as a prototypical millennial, Soto takes comfort in the cold hard numbers:

“I feel like it’s nice to have a log of your confirmation of what you felt. You can tell people you have heartbreak and you feel bad,” Soto said. “People become less cynical once you show them the numbers or once you show the data or graphs. Everyone understands heartbreak, right? Everyone’s felt it. When you have this, it’s interesting — you have something to show.”

And now he’s an international viral sensation, which hopefully makes the sting of heartbreak that much easier to deal with.
