Lawyer Asks For Football Continuance, Judge Says He Must Wear Green Bay Packers Cheesehead To Court

Did this lawyer comply with the judge's amusing order?

It’s football playoff season, and almost every season, at least one lawyer is such a big fan that he needs to ask a judge for a continuance in order to watch the big game. This season, that lawyer is Curtis Creveling, who hails from Allentown, Pennsylvania, but has been a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan — he’s a “die-hard cheesehead,” if you will.

Before we rang in the New Year, Creveling discovered that he’d won tickets to a Packers playoff game. Unfortunately, he wasn’t going to know where the game would be held until until the first week of 2016, so he sent a preemptive letter to a judge who would be hearing one of his client’s cases in a desperate attempt to get a continuance. After all, his client had no problem with the case being delayed. Here’s the letter Creveling sent to Judge Bruce K. Doman:

Per WSJ Law Blog, Creveling “thought [he] was in trouble” when he received Judge Doman’s response, because it brought up his “ethical responsibilities.” Creveling soon found out he wasn’t in trouble at all. In fact, Judge Doman seemed amused:

As it turns out, Creveling won’t have to travel far to see the game. It’s being held this Sunday in Maryland where the Washington Redskins will have a home-field advantage. He did, however, kind of comply with Judge Doman’s order. From WSJ Law Blog:

On Monday, at a hearing in another case, he walked into Judge Doman’s courtroom with a jumbo cheesehead in tow. He didn’t actually wear it but placed it on the counsel table, explaining the situation to a puzzled-turned-amused opposing lawyer.

Creveling may have had luck on his side when it came to getting a continuance, but it might run out when the Packers hit the field this weekend against the Redskins, considering his team sucked so badly at the end of the season. Go Pack, go!
