All The Best Swag At LegalTech NY

A review of the best in LegalTech booths.

giftLast week, vendors and technological gurus poured into the Midtown Hilton to pontificate on cybersecurity, document management, the hottest new apps, and a future of law where complex algorithms and cloud solutions streamline lawyering like the steam powered drill helped out John Henry. It’s also an opportunity to pay $13.00 for Bud Light — a terrifying statement about America in 2016.

However, the real draw of LegalTech remains the exhibit floor, where vendors compete for wandering eyeballs with flashy booth layouts, enticing giveaways, and all-around cool swag. While the booths seemed much more reserved than in years past, there were still gems to seen at this year’s show.

First and foremost, we’ve got to hand it to CS Disco. At one point during the conference I tweeted this observation after watching one too many gaggle of lawyers struggle to keep up with a demo:

CS Disco objected to this characterization and I had to doubledown that their booth resulted in a steady stream of lawyers making that face — not because they left confused, but because the booth left them wowed. That’s because CS Disco brought an Oculus Rift, the high-tech virtual reality system, and took booth visitors on a VR roller coaster (complete with CS Disco billboards, of course).

It’s impressive how much vertigo your brain can feel when you intellectually realize that you’re sitting still in a hotel ballroom.

A more grounded booth toy came from Veritas who brought us “The Claw” straight out of Toy Story:

I won a Veritas branded Moscow Mule mug, which as swag goes is pretty cool.

Catalyst won the show a couple years ago by handing out branded rolling papers to celebrate marijuana legalization in its home state of Colorado. This year it followed-up with some edibles:

But before you call the Feds on Catalyst:

Onit brought a Lego mascot to the party:

And yet when it came to “fun with Legos” it was hard to top this guy recreating Starry Night at the Exterro booth:

Another hit of the show was How To Manage A Small Law Firm, who brought in puppies to delight the crowd:

And it was a serious crowd — easily the most congested booth I passed in my two days roaming the hall.

iPro boasted a Formula 1 theme with dueling cars hooked to a video game.

Meanwhile, TransPerfect offered a less exhilarating sports simulation with a virtual driving range:

Well, not entirely virtual. You still had to swing a real golf ball at full force into the screen, which made it sound like a gun was going off in the exhibit hall every few seconds.

But sometimes the simplest swag is the best. Huron Legal handed out jar openers.

It may not seem like much, but after dealing with a particularly pesky jar of salsa Super Bowl Sunday, I’m pretty glad Huron decided to go down this road.
