A terrible accident that taps into some deep-seated fears of New Yorkers has taken place this morning. A crane collapsed in lower Manhattan at 8:25 a.m. — right in the middle of rush hour — and the wreckage is strewn across two city blocks. Reports currently indicate that one bystander, only identified as a 38-year-old man, has died in the incident. Two others were removed from vehicles that were crushed by the crane and taken to the hospital.
The accident, which took place in the area around 40 Worth Street, between West Broadway and Church Street, also impacts the law school community. Many New York Law School students, faculty, and staff walk up and down that block on a daily basis on their way to school. As a result, NYLS is closed today:

It is a snowy and windy day, and the crane was reportedly hoisting an air conditioning unit when the collapse happened. (UPDATE (11:11 a.m.): The crane was being moved to get it into a secure position due to weather concerns, according to Mayor de Blasio’s press conference.)
Some are describing the experience as being like a bomb or an earthquake. Con Ed is also investigating a possible gas leak as a result of the crash as witnesses have reported smelling gas.
