John Oliver Says What We All Know About Voter ID Laws

In case you thought a few months off might have hampered Oliver's biting wit, rest assured, he is still glorious.

John Oliver LFJohn Oliver is back, bi!tches! Season 3 started this weekend and, in case you thought a few months off might have hampered Oliver’s biting wit, rest assured, he is still glorious.

It’s an election year and so he is taking on the core of our democracy, voting. Now that there is even science that proves it, Oliver is happy to be another voice saying, “Yes Virginia, voter ID laws do suppress voter turn out.”

Not content to be a one-trick pony (though that trick is capital T True), Oliver also ties Republican legislators’ support of voter ID law to the hypocritical practice of “ghost voting.” That (all too common) practice is when a lawmaker has a fellow legislator vote for them when they are too busy to cast their own vote. But don’t worry, “voter fraud,” no matter how infrequently it really happens, is still treated as the bigger threat to democracy.
