Two Dead After Shooting Spree That Began At Law Firm

There are still many unanswered questions in this case.

police crime tapeEarlier this week, we received some sobering news from Alabama. Two people were gunned down and killed at a law firm and nearby accounting office after the alleged shooter, Jimmy Cooper, opened fire on Wednesday morning.

According to local news outlets, the shooting began at the Hunt Law firm, where attorney Scott Hunt witnessed the violence, but was not hurt. The Associated Press has more information:

Cooper faces two capital murder charges in the deaths of Donny Miller, 67, and Linda Cole, 61. Miller was Cooper’s former business partner and Cooper was a client of Cole’s, [Marion County District Attorney Jack] Bostick said.

Court records show Cooper had owned an insulation company and was ordered to pay more than $59,000 in a 2010 lawsuit. A lawsuit Miller filed in 2014 said that he, Cooper and Cooper’s daughter had been partners in a foam insulation business. Miller had the lawsuit dismissed in June.

Why was Miller at the Hunt Law office that morning, and how did Cooper know he would be there that morning? Why did Cooper then seek out Cole to allegedly continue his shooting spree? There are still many unanswered questions in this case.

Police haven’t released a motive for the shooting, but according to AL.com, Cooper had been committed to a mental hospital earlier in 2015. Following the tragedy, Marion County Sheriff Kevin Williams said, “We have a problem with mental patients with guns … Alabama needs to step up. They need to address this problem.”

District Attorney Bostick had this to say of the gun violence: “Today has put everyone in shock. Obviously this is not something anyone ever anticipates or expects. The entire community is just stunned at this point in time.”

This is terribly sad. We here at Above the Law would like to extend our condolences and sympathies to Donny Miller’s and Linda Cole’s family, friends, and colleagues.
