Authorities do not suspect foul play, but have not yet ruled it out.

police crime tapeWe’ve got some sad news out of the Las Vegas, Nevada, area today. Reports have confirmed that following a police wellness check, Henderson Chief Municipal Judge Diana Hampton, 50, was found dead in her home on Sunday. She was the city’s first female judge. Here are some additional details from Fox News:

Municipal Judge Diana Hampton, who was 50, was known by colleagues as a hard worker and appeared to be the perfect picture of health. Her death shocked colleagues, one of whom told the paper he planned to have lunch with the judge this week.

Hampton, who served as a municipal judge for more than a decade, worked with youth in the community to discourage them from crime.

Authorities do not suspect foul play, but have not yet ruled it out.

Hampton, a graduate of California Western School of Law, came under fire for her unique background in 2005 when she ran for her first elected position as a judge. She had worked for a stripper for a year before going to law school, but a trusted friend and mentor encouraged her to embrace her past. Despite the initial scrutiny, Hampton won the election, and served as a municipal judge for more than a decade prior to her sudden death. Her fellow judges were “saddened by the news of their friend and colleague passing away.”

Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen said this of Hampton: “She was a leader, serving as Chief Judge and working tirelessly to help make our community better. Her presence on the bench and in our community will be deeply missed.”

We here at Above the Law would like to extend our condolences and sympathies to Chief Judge Diana Hampton’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
