The Law Schools With The Highest (And Lowest) LSAT Scores

How did your law school measure up against the schools on this list?

LSAT 2 RFWhen it comes to law school decisions, it’s often a tale of two LSAT scores. A remarkable LSAT score or an unexceptional LSAT score can mean the difference between attending an elite law school or an unranked law school.

If you want to get into an elite law school, then your LSAT score had better be remarkable. While it’s a rare feat for prospective law students to actually attain a perfect score (180), many pre-law gunners strive for their own score to at least hover near such great heights, perhaps settling for a score in the 170s. On the flip side of the coin, some would-be law students are perfectly happy with a score in the low 140s.

Which law schools had the highest LSAT scores, and which ones had the lowest?

The answer may be obvious to those who track the U.S. News law school rankings. It’s a given that the law schools at the very top of the rankings are going to have the highest LSAT scores, but even some of the best law schools in the country have lowered their standards when it comes to admissions in these troubled times for legal education. According to the Short List blog of U.S. News & World Report, one top law school is curiously missing from the list of law schools with the best LSAT scores.

Here are the Top 11 law schools with the highest LSAT scores, courtesy of the Short List:

LSAT Highest Scores

The average median LSAT score for the law schools that made the cut for the Top 11 was 170. All of the schools ranked in the Top 10 of the latest edition of the U.S. News rankings made the list — except for UC Berkeley. Boalt Hall’s median LSAT score for full-time students entering in fall 2015 was 166. This is the fourth year in a row that the law school has failed to compete with its T14 brethren, and that may be even more scandalous than having a dean who’s been accused of sexual harassment.

Also of note here is the fact that Duke, a law school that was recently hoisted by its own petard with a three-spot drop in the rankings, is still performing at a higher level than both UVA and UC Berkeley, the law schools it was tied with in the rankings last year.

As for the law schools with the lowest median LSAT score, the Short List has pegged Texas Southern and Charlotte with a 143. In case you were wondering, the 25th percentile LSAT score for Texas Southern was 141, while the 25th percentile LSAT score for Charlotte was 140. Ouch. You almost can’t help but to feel bad for them.
