Wow, Check Out This ASSoL Dean's Vanity License Plates!

What's the best way to celebrate a law school name change that's been widely criticized? With your very own vanity license plate!

What a bunch of ASSoLs.

What a bunch of ASSoLs.

Ever since George Mason University School of Law announced that it had accepted a $30 million gift on the condition that it change the name of the school to honor the late Justice Antonin Scalia, there has been public outcry from students, alumni, and university faculty alike. Absolutely nothing about this transition has been smooth.

A new name was chosen, and the school would forever be known as the Antonin Scalia School of Law at George Mason University — until a series of unfortunate hashtags (#ASSoL; #ASSLaw) rose up on social media sites. The school then rebranded itself as the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University in an attempt to undo the damage done, but we’re afraid that, like an elephant, the internet never forgets.

Earlier this week, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia unanimously declined to override the law school’s name change. What’s the best way to celebrate a law school name change that’s been widely criticized? With your very own vanity license plate, of course! Here’s Dean Henry Butler posing with his brand-new plate:

We reached out to Dean Butler earlier this afternoon to ask him how he came to acquire this piece of history. Here’s what he had to say to us about his SCALIA plates:

About a month ago, a Virginia DMV mobile office was set up outside the law school and I thought it would be cool to have a George Mason University tag with “SCALIA” and the university logo. There was no line, so I checked on the availability of the name and took advantage of the opportunity. Hey, he who hesitates is lost. The plate is proudly affixed to my 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser.

OK, I admit that it is pretty nerdy to think that it is cool. Awesome, nonetheless.

You have to admit, those plates are pretty cool. What a neat conquest for a law dean.

Congrats on those sweet plates, Dean Butler. We sincerely hope no one rear ends you.
