Final Magic Circle Firm Matches

Relief in the halls of this firm.

money bills benjamins smallYou know, we were starting to get a little worried there. Once all the other Magic Circle firms — and a Silver Circle firm — had announced raises, the days just kept ticking by without hearing a peep from Linklaters. Perhaps the impending Brexit debacle has kept them up at night.

Whatever triggered the long delay, it came to an end last night when the firm announced its raises. In a memo from U.S. practice head Scott Bowie sent at 7:55 last night, Linklaters associates were thrilled to learn that they would be matching the Cravath scale through the Class of 2008 ($315K).

In keeping with standard — but by no means universal — practice, the raise takes effect on July 1. Summers are getting a match as well.

We were receiving increasingly irate emails from associates over the last week. But now that everything’s been handled, associates are playing it off with cool confidence:

As always, unsurprising news that we matched, and now it’s getting to be a thing that we match late. Still, we usually don’t get nickel and dimed, so it wasn’t much of a worry.

A good reminder that as long as a firm gets its raises in order by July 1, it isn’t really late. Just a little stress-inducing for its associates.

UPDATE (6/23/16 10 a.m.): Actually, some tipsters point out the firm isn’t matching for the Class of 07 at $325K. As people following my posts know, I’ve been harping on this issue when it comes up and I usually get a curt response text that the reason some firms are stopping at $315K is that their firm doesn’t have associates that old because they either make partner or counsel. Apparently Linklaters is the exact firm where this distinction matters.
