law books and gavelThe University of Maine School of Law is in the heart of Portland, Maine, the state’s largest city, and a destination for foodies, art and music lovers, and island hoppers. Maine Law is fully accredited by the American Bar Association, and is one of the smallest and most affordable law schools in the United States.

Uncommon Access Leads to Student Success

From Day 1, Maine Law J.D. students have many opportunities to learn beyond the classroom and use their legal knowledge in real cases as student attorneys.

With one of the nation’s oldest and most respected live-client clinical programs, Maine Law students have the opportunity to represent poor, elderly, and juvenile clients within four distinct legal aid clinics.

Students also have ready access to practicing attorneys and judges, entrepreneurs, local and state government leaders, and business executives who are alumni or friends of Maine Law. They act as clinic mentors, guest lecturers, externship supervisors, and class project advisors.

Making a Difference on Campus and Beyond

Maine Law students are increasingly seeking a law degree to make an impact beyond the walls of a courtroom or law office, in fields like information security, entertainment and sports, medicine, or agriculture. Professors and advisors encourage students to explore career interests through in-the-field legal research, journal writings, and student-led projects.

These opportunities allow students to have hands-on experience in business and government settings and prepare them for summer or academic year fellowships with a variety of organizations in Maine and beyond.

A Focus on Social Justice

It is the duty of Maine Law to give back to Maine communities and to help keep the doors of justice open for all. Civic engagement and public service have been at the core of a Maine Law education since the school first opened its doors in 1962.

Maine Law students make a difference:

  • In clinical courses that combine intensive instruction, mentoring, and live-client representation;
  • Through a Pro Bono Program that encourages students to provide a minimum of 80 hours of free legal service, without financial compensation or academic credit, before graduation; and
  • Through the Maine Law Center for Law + Innovation and the Center for Oceans & Coastal Law, where students help to drive research and public policy development in Maine and beyond.

Some of the problems our students help solve are as intense and complex as at any law school.

A Maine Original

Like Bean Boots, Old Town Canoes, and whoopie pies, the University of Maine School of Law is a Maine original. As the first and only law school in the state, Maine Law is a respected resource for those in Maine’s legal field and the general public.

Known for its circular-shaped main building and noted professors who have left larger cities and universities for a close-knit environment, Maine Law offers so much to its students from its doorstep.

Portland has minor league baseball and basketball teams, live music, opera and ballet, the Portland Museum of Art, and Portland Science Center.

Four seasons of outdoor activities — from surfing to sailing, hiking, fishing, mountain climbing and skiing are a block or a short drive away. Historical museums and local lighthouses help newcomers understand Portland and the region’s past.
