Nationwide Layoff Watch: Left Longing For A Paycheck After A Long Weekend

Which firm decided to conduct layoffs the day after Memorial Day?

layoff noticeDid you enjoy your long weekend? If you’re like most lawyers and legal professionals, we’re sure you tried your very best to have a good time, but work was always on your mind. Now, imagine returning to work on Tuesday — after you spent what was supposed to be a relaxing weekend thinking about your job — only to find out that you no longer had a job.

Sources tell us that Sedgwick initiated layoffs on Tuesday, May 31. These layoffs affected staff members ranging from legal secretaries to paralegals to clerks. While some tipsters say that the layoffs were centralized in the firm’s Los Angeles office, others say that they’ve heard layoffs were conducted at additional Sedgwick offices.

We reached out to the firm for confirmation, and a spokesperson had this to say:

Like any well-run business, we must evaluate our needs to ensure we are delivering outstanding service and value to our clients. We strive to maintain efficient staff ratios and are making necessary adjustments consistent with the current trend across the legal profession. Technological enhancements continue to allow for leaner staff ratios. Sedgwick’s decision to eliminate less than 10 staff positions across a firm of 600+ people was not taken lightly. Severance, outsourcing services and extended benefit periods were provided to the affected individuals.

We wish all of the legal professionals and affected individuals at Sedgwick the best of luck while they seek new job opportunities in the legal industry and beyond.

If your firm or organization is closing its doors or reducing the ranks of its lawyers or staff, whether through open layoffs, stealth layoffs, or voluntary buyouts, please don’t hesitate to let us know.
