Some Random Friday Fun: A Biglaw Associate's Music Video

When Biglaw attorneys try their hand at making music videos, big fun is sure to ensue.

St Lenox Thurgood Marshall Ten Hymns From My American GothicWhen Biglaw attorneys try their hand at making music videos, big fun is sure to ensue.

Back in 2014, a Weil Gotshal associate produced an epic “save the date” video for his wedding (video no longer online, sadly, but the associate is still at Weil). Earlier this year, a Skadden partner said goodbye to his legal career — and hello to his second act as a winemaker — in a humorous musical departure memo.

Today we bring you a different kind of Biglaw music video — still extremely well-executed, but with somewhat higher artistic aspirations. We learned about it from an associate at Holland & Knight:

[A]n associate at my firm is a very talented musician, and very few people at the firm actually know or understand this. He opened for the Mountain Goats in Ohio recently and has a new album, Ten Hymns From My American Gothic. But of immediate interest to ATL, perhaps, is he’s made a music video about law school that is getting a little attention:

At the very least, I’m proud of him and wish more people knew about him. But I also think it’s a cool story about lawyers who do other things. Just thought I’d share!

Here’s what Stereogum has to say about the lawyer/musician in question, Andrew “Andy” Choi, who performs as “St. Lenox”:

St. Lenox is Andy Choi, a New York lawyer and Juilliard-trained concert violinist whose extremely distinct music is equal parts jarring and charming. Choi’s voice is one of the most striking instruments in music today, a harsh and commanding howl that reminds me of John Darnielle, Michael Stipe, and Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart but is something entirely its own. His subject matter is equally transfixing and unique, a mix of queer love songs, protest music, and savvy observations about the modern American experience.

And tributes to late Supreme Court justices mixed in with reflections on contemporary U.S. legal education. We present to you the video for the lead single from Choi’s new album, “Thurgood Marshall.” There’s a lot going on here (including a great shout-out to Professor Richard Epstein, the star of the first narrative); note that Choi has a Ph.D. in philosophy as well as musical training from Juilliard.

But we agree with Stereogum: “before you think too hard about it, just sit back and enjoy.”
