Wow! This Law School's Tuition Cuts Will Save Students More Than $50K

The fewer loan dollars law school graduates need to repay, the better!

tuition cutWhat are law school administrators to do when the school’s enrollment has dropped by nearly 30 percent over the past few years? They figure out a way to slash tuition as soon as possible to entice students to attend.

That’s exactly what’s happening at the West Virginia University College of Law, where enrollment has fallen by 27 percent since 2011. Late last week, the school unveiled a new program — one that administrators say is the first of its kind — to cut tuition for out-of-state students. Here’s more information from WVU Today:

Beginning fall 2017, non-residents who graduate from a public or private higher education institution in West Virginia will be eligible for in-state tuition at the WVU College of Law.

To qualify for the new Loyalty Tuition Program, students must earn a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in the state.

According to Dean Gregory Bowman, this program will create opportunities for students with ties to the state: “We are offering non-resident students a more affordable way to earn a J.D. from a top-rated, best-value law school without leaving West Virginia. They already know and appreciate our state, and we think this program is a great way to encourage them to stay in West Virginia while also saving money on law school tuition.”

For the 2016-2017 academic year, tuition for out-of-state students is $37,674. Using this year’s tuition numbers, under WVU Law’s new Loyalty Tuition Program, out-of-state students would stand to save more than $16,000 per year, since in-state tuition is $20,916. That’s slightly more than $50,000 of savings over the course of a three-year period, which is a tuition plan that’s definitely worth applauding.

Congratulations to West Virginia Law for coming up with a plan to cut tuition that will benefit its students in a major way after they graduate. The fewer loan dollars law school graduates need to repay in the future, the better!
