This month’s podcasts on Legal Talk Network had something for just about everybody.

image-for-octThis month’s podcasts on Legal Talk Network had something for just about everybody. Lawyer 2 Lawyer and Thinking Like A Lawyer took on topical issues from the upcoming Supreme Court term to gender discrimination within Biglaw firm management and payrolls. Legal technology, always a prevalent topic, was addressed by the founders of Fastcase, Neill Feather of Sitelock talked about website security, and legal techsperts Dennis Kennedy and Tom Mighell analyzed their attitudes towards new operating systems and Twitter. And for solos and small firms, there were some useful podcasts on alternative billing structures and freelance lawyering. Additionally, Legal Talk Network launched a new show this month featuring legal suggestions for businesses of all types, including startups and large corporations! Which subject matter pairs best with your morning commute (my favorite was the alternative billing series)?

Supreme Court Preview: Waiting for Garland

After a quick segment of Grinds My Gears with Elie Mystal, in which he explained the failures of Halloween as a holiday, Joe Patrice, Elie, and SCOTUSBlog contributor and Supreme Court litigator Tejinder Singh talked about the upcoming Supreme Court Term (it was Tejinder’s second appearance on Thinking Like A Lawyer).

Gender Discrimination in the Workplace

As a professional woman, I get heated about any discrimination in the workplace. This Lawyer 2 Lawyer taught me that the legal industry has enormous issues with the number of women in management positions and the negative attitude towards female lawyers who are willing to draw attention to the issue.

For Fastcase founders, the message is: Change, and do it faster!

In 1999, Ed Walters and Phil Rosenthal started the legal research software company Fastcase, not to build up the business and sell it, but to actually make a long-term change in the market of legal research and access to justice. The legal trailblazers talked about their journey on this episode of Legal Rebels.

The Importance of Website Security for Law Firms

Sitelock is a one-stop shop for website security (and also, full disclosure, the sponsor for Digital Detectives). Neill Feather discussed how important website security is for everyone, particularly law firms of all sizes. I thought no one would ever want to target my website before I listened to this podcast; apparently it’s critical even for small law firms and solos (basically anyone with a website at all).

The Pros and Cons of Upgrading Your System

This month, Dennis Kennedy and Tom Mighell discussed their own underwhelmed attitudes towards the recent Windows 10 release and what they think it means for the way lawyers upgrade their operating systems as a whole. Also, depending on who acquires Twitter, they talked about whether they will walk away from the social media service forever (cue dramatic music).

Implementing Alternative Billing in your Law Practice and 6 Steps to Make Alternative Fees Profitable

In this New Solo two-part series, attorney and boutique law firm founder Mary Vandenack talked all about the complex nature of alternative fee structures. Terms like automation, analysis, client value, and profit were used to creatively make the point that no practice is too customizable for alternative fees. Mary also gave a detailed account of how to implement alternative fee structures in a solo practice or small firm.

Surviving and Thriving in the Gig Economy

“A freelance lawyer isn’t going to charge for their learning curve.” If you’ve ever wondered what the terms “contract lawyer” and “freelance lawyer” mean, this episode of Un-Billable Hour is worth a listen. In it, Lisa Solomon explained the difference between the two, benefits to said lawyer and the law firm, and ethical requirements for hiring a freelance lawyer.

And featured in Legal Talk Network’s new podcast, Thomson Reuters: Down the Hall with Practical Law, was legal advice for business owners in all industries.

Privacy and Data Security: Understanding the Legal Landscape

In today’s world, terms like privacy, data security, and information security get thrown around constantly, but what do they actually mean and why should law firms be paying particular attention? Privacy & Data Security Senior Legal Editor Mel Gates explained the breakdown of systems in successful companies today and what lawyers need to pay particular attention to.

Top Legal Mistakes a Startup Can’t Afford to Make

After you get that amazing idea for an app at the bar and somehow put together funding with your college roommate, it turns out there are a lot of legal issues many startup founders don’t consider. Practical Law Startup & Venture Capital Senior Legal Editor Joe Green gave a few legal tips and explained why startups should at least have a legal consultation and what can happen if you don’t.

Hot Topics in Employee Handbooks

You heard it here first, folks! No but seriously, having a comprehensive employee handbook that you stick to is very important for businesses of all sizes. Kate Bally explained further in this inaugural episode of the new podcast.
