A Conversation With Dan Lear, Avvo's Tech Evangelist

Here's how to do something different with your J.D.

Dan LearDan Lear (@rightbrainlaw) is Director of Industry Relations at Avvo, and he represents so much of what gets me excited about legal technology. First, as I’ve written many times before, I would like to see lawyers become more entrepreneurial. Starting your own business is not for everyone, but I cannot tell you how many lawyers email me about tips for starting a tech startup. My response (and I’ve become like a broken record on this issue) is “Have you considered starting your own practice?” So, naturally I tend to be more interested in companies that are making it easier to be a solo lawyer, and Avvo, the online directory and review site for lawyers (last valued at $650M), is certainly one of the companies leading that charge.

Dan is also great example of how you can do something different with your J.D. I know many people who choose law school because they think it’s going to open doors not just in law firms but in the “business world” as well. The problem is that not everyone is quite sure how to open these proverbial doors or even where to look for them. But as more legal technology companies continue to gain traction, many will offer new opportunities for attorneys. So whether it’s Joshua Lenon, Clio’s Lawyer in Residence, David Horrigan, kCura’s Legal Content Director or (ATL columnist) Joe Borstein over at Legal Managed Services, there is going to be a place for lawyers at new innovative companies.

Want to know how to make that happen? Follow along below as Dan joins me here on ATL to discuss his career, legal tech content, Avvo and the shifting landscape of the legal industry.
