World's Largest Law Firm Conducts Layoffs

We wish all affected individuals at the firm the best of luck.

fired firing layoff laid offAs more law firms begin to open international back-office business hubs, it’s come to be expected that layoffs would soon follow. Earlier this fall, for example, DLA Piper announced that it would be conducting one of the largest mass layoffs since the Great Lathaming of 2009, slashing about 180 business support roles in the United Kingdom in order to shift jobs to its new back-office hub in Poland.

Yet another Biglaw firm — the biggest one of them all, actually — opened a business center in Warsaw this week, and just like DLA Piper before it, the firm expects to cut business support roles in the U.K. to transition job functions to its Poland outpost, which has about 70 staff members working there in business development, marketing, human resources, and IT functions. Which firm could it be?

It’s Dentons, the 7,500-lawyer Biglaw behemoth, and the firm is so large that the number of layoffs accounts for but a fractional percentage of its overall footprint on this earth in terms of support roles. Here’s more information from Legal Week:

Dentons is cutting approximately 25 UK jobs after a business services consultation prompted by the launch of a new shared services centre in Warsaw, which opened this week. …

When the consultation was announced this May, it was thought that a greater number of jobs would be lost. However, in a statement the firm said: “While initial proposals indicated that around 50 roles could be affected, the final outcome is anticipated to be approximately half this number.”

We wish all of the legal professionals and affected individuals at Dentons the best of luck while they seek new job opportunities in the legal industry and beyond.
