In 2016, we saw around 8,500 lateral moves in the top Am Law 200 law firms. From this number, associates accounted for around 5,000, partners 2,000, and counsel, 1,300.

As courtesy of Leopard Solutions, a database that we leverage to improve our recruiting performance developed by our good friend Laura Leopard, here is a breakdown of moves within the top 200 law firms by attorney type:

We are seeing an increasing demand in the job market for counsel-level attorneys. In 2016, around 15 percent of the total number of attorneys who moved within the Am Law 200 were at the counsel level. I noticed this trend back in August 2013, and predicted that this portion of the market would just continue to grow, especially as firms are slower to promote into equity ranks.

At Lateral Link, we have successfully stayed ahead of the trends, and probably even helped to establish some of them. When it comes to creating markets for attorneys, one of the most important values that we provide our candidates comes from our ability to leverage information with key decision makers.
