University of Minnesota law professor, Francesco Parisi, was arrested this Friday after a former lover alleged he tried to run her over with a car and has been stalking her since their breakup five months ago.

Professor Parisi was reportedly arrested on probable cause of criminal sexual conduct, false imprisonment and harassment and/or stalking. But, according to Fox 9 the county attorney’s office hasn’t decided on charges yet, but is weighing its options. Parisi’s attorney made a statement denying the allegations and advancing the theory that the accusations against his client are all part of an extortion plan:

“Professor Parisi is 100 percent completely innocent of these allegations,” said criminal defense attorney Barry Edwards. “This is an attempt by an estranged friend in her ongoing attempt to extort concessions in some real estate negotiations between the parties.”

The law school is aware of the allegations but hasn’t spoken to the professor about them yet. According to the school’s website, Parisi is a standout in the field of law and economics, and quite the prolific writer:

[Parisi] is the author of 10 books and approximately 200 papers in the field of law and economics. Professor Parisi is currently serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Review of Law and Economics and served as Editor of the Supreme Court Economic Review from 2002 to 2008. He is a member of the board of editors of the International Review of Law and Economics, the Journal of Public Choice, the American Journal of Comparative Law, and he serves on the Board of Advisors of the Social Sciences Research Network.

Parisi’s bail hearing is set for Tuesday afternoon.
