Chatbots And Tool Tips Welcome Spring

A cool new tool can give you real-time advice about your rights as an airline passenger.

The Circuit by Monica Bay - main imageHallelujah! Winter is almost over! Baseball has returned! My magnolia tree has bloomed, and the sun stays awake past seven p.m. It’s time to put away the heavy jackets and roll down the car windows!

Here are some fresh events that may jumpstart your energy this spring.

Litigation Tool Tips: A Holistic Approach to Litigation Technology
April 28, 1:00 p.m. to 2 p.m. (Eastern). American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division. Free. Sponsors: Allegory, Casetext, and PacerPro. (Note: No CLE credits.)

Says the team: “Litigators know that maintaining an overall theme is the key to a case’s success. But in the fog of litigation, lawyers can lose sight of the big picture. They become so focused on specific facets of a case that they risk missing the forest for the trees. Technology is partly to blame. The technology tools litigators use are often so specific in their purpose that case work necessarily gets segmented and siloed.”

“With careful planning and the right tools, however, it is possible to take a more ‘holistic’ approach to litigation and litigation technology. Different technology tools can be used in ways that complement each other so that you can more effectively connect the dots,” they say.

The panelists will discuss “the problems they faced as lawyers, the technology companies they have built to address these problems, and how their different platforms can be used in integrated ways to streamline everything from docket management and delivery to legal research and writing to case and knowledge management.”

Lawyer/journalist Robert Ambrogi will moderate; the three CEOs/lawyers will speak: Alma Asay (Allegory); Gavin McGrane (PaperPro); and Jake Heller (Casetext). Register here.

Says Asay: “I love working with other legal technology companies because we’re able to deliver a complete toolset for lawyers. Rather than one tool that does a little of a lot, lawyers get the best of specialized tools in every area, delivered through a single, unified experience.”

(Disclosure: Ambrogi and I co-host the Law Technology Now podcast at Legal Talk Network.)

Civil Rights/Women’s Rights and the Role of Young Lawyers
Another ABA Young Lawyer Division offering:  No need to wait, you can click on this presentation right now. The panelists (below) discussed “how they got involved in civil rights matters, current issues that women and minority groups face, and how attorneys can get involved through the ABA and other channels to combat racism, discrimination and sexism.”

Moderator: Melissa Little, Trial Lawyer, Alexandria, Va.
Speakers: Janel George, National Women’s Law Center, Washington, D.C.
Judith Brown Dianis, Advancement Project, Washington, D.C.

If you don’t know what a chatbot is, it’s time to dive in. I was clueless until I attended the CodeX FutureLaw conference (April 6), where “The Rise of the Legal Chatbots” panel mesmerized the 200+ audience. The speakers explained how chatbots have emerged as useful tools for collecting information and advancing legal options in areas such as “immigration, healthcare, passenger rights, traffic tickets,” to name a few. The conversation addressed the nuances of issues such as who is responsible when providing legal advice and will disclaimers be enough.

Meanwhile, keep an eye out on Amy Wan, partner at CrowdfundingLawyers.net and founder and co-organizer of Legal Hackers LA. In the wake of the United Airlines’ fiasco removing Doctor David Dao from his seat against his will, Wan has created an AirFair (AirFairAI) chatbot on Facebook.

“It’s a Facebook messenger chatbot that advises folks on their legal rights when flying,” she said. “Right now, it informs folks about things to think about — their rights when volunteering a seat; being denied boarding; and how to keep their device data private if a customs agent asks for it. It can also draft a script for a passenger to submit to an airline to ask for compensation,” said Wan. Check it out.

Enjoy the spring!
