Would You Like To Fight Me About Repealing The Constitution? What About Repealing Megan's Laws?

Come to the second installment of Persuade Me.

Persuade me ep 2This Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Greene Space in SoHo, I’m doing another installment of Persuade Me for WNYC Studios.

In case you missed the first one, the show involves me debating another advocate, with me taking a (likely losing) contrarian side. The first show pitted me against Slate’s Mark Joseph Stern, where I tried to argue that hate crime laws were unnecessary. Here’s the stream of me losing that one.

Friday night, we’re going to use our time to do two quicker debates.

For the first 45 minutes, I’ll be debating Jenner & Block’s Lindsay Harrison over repealing and replacing the Constitution. Yes, you’ve heard right-wingers call for a second Constitutional convention, but I’m going to come at it from the left. Harrison will be arguing that our stupid amendment process is the better way to change our document. Harrison has argued in front of the Supreme Court, and I have, like, heard oral arguments on tape before, so this should be a totally fair fight.

In the second block, I’ll be taking on Seema Iyer over Megan’s Laws. Apparently, going to jail isn’t enough of a punishment for people who have been convicted of sex crimes, so we’ve decided to continue to shame them when they try to re-integrate into society. And… this is okay to many people. Iyer, the “Bollywood Lawyer,” will defend parents’ right to know who might be ogling their children. I’ll be on the side of, I don’t know, a basic sense of LIBERTY.

It should be fun; $15 gets you both debates. Kai Wright will be judging the proceedings, and he’ll be our very own “so-called judge” to keep things humming like we’re in Gonzalo Curiel’s courtroom. There will be beer and wine during the show, to say nothing of what I’ll probably need to drink after sounding like a crazy lefty who doesn’t just want a right to privacy installed into the Constitution, but one who would then extend that right to child molesters.

Friday, 7:00 p.m., 160 Varick Street. Come scream at us for 90 minutes.
