Black Lives Matter Is Making Mother's Day A Little Sweeter For Some Women

A poignant way to celebrate the holiday.

BlackLivesMatter signWe have to be doing that [working for criminal justice policy reform]. But we also can be collecting our resources to make a direct impact on the material conditions of our people who are in cages right now.

— Marbre Stahly-Butts, partnership director at Law for Black Lives, talking about activists, including Organizers with Southerners on New Ground (SONG), the Movement for Black Lives, and ColorOfChange, raising over $250,000 for “National Mama’s Bail Out Day.” They will be posting bail for at least 30 women in Atlanta, Houston, Minneapolis, and Los Angeles who are unable to afford it and are being detained pretrial, so they can celebrate Mother’s Day with their freedom. They are also drawing attention to the inequities of the bail system which puts people who have not been convicted of any crime in jail simply because of their inability to pay.
