Servicing The $8.4 Billion alt.legal 'Gold Rush'

Meet Zach Abramowitz, who publishes ReplyAll stories from nearly all legal conferences.

Laptop and BanknotesLast month, this column went super-nerd, evoking “The Matrix” and digging into how the alt.legal industry has become an $8.4 billion (and growing) segment of the legal economy.  This alt.legal gold is being unearthed by lawyers, business-people, and their tech-savvy friends.  They are leveraging intelligent algorithms, sophisticated business processes, and globalized work forces. Well, if all of that still sounds like Biglaw-style torture in sheep’s clothing, then meet Zach Abramowitz.  Zach’s story showed me how there are many ways a former lawyer can work within this booming segment of legal.  His way is media, and it’s pretty damn cool, but there will be others.

Zach is the quintessential Above the Law reader- turned- author. He graduated from NYU Law and then went on to practice as an M&A lawyer at the world-class law firm, Schulte Roth and Zabel.

But while many alt.legal entrepreneurs swear that they “loved” the practice, Zach is too honest.   He first tried to leave law during his 1L at NYU when he joined ESPN as the legal intern on the Max Kellerman show. Alas, after practicing for a couple of years, Zach left law for a second time to start a totally non-law-related content startup, ReplyAll.  ReplyAll provides a way to publish ongoing conversations online, where the world can follow them in real time.  And if you have ever read his articles on ATL, you have already seen it in action.

After partnering with Above the Law, he got sucked back in to the world of legal!  He began publishing conversations with founders of disruptive legal technology startups.  Over time, many of the companies using ReplyAll for sponsored content became disruptive companies in the legal space (or, as we call them, alt.legal companies).

Today, Zach publishes ReplyAll stories from nearly all legal conferences.  He brings a great perspective as a former lawyer, alt.legal writer, and first-generation servicer of this $8.4 billion industry looking to define itself.

Enjoy the post and note the format!
