Stat Of The Week: Extreme 'Non-Trad' Law Student

A 73-year old law student will graduate tomorrow.

stat imageThis week’s stat is “73” — the age of University of Tennessee Law School 3L Tom Winston. “Bored with retirement” and despite the fact that “lawyers had been a major disappointment” to him in his previous career as a healthcare industry CEO, Winston decided to enroll in law school at age 70 and will graduate tomorrow.

After this past week of mostly bewildering and disturbing news stories, one small consolation may be this delightful video interview with Winston where he encourages fellow seniors to “recapture the magic of learning,” and decries the “waste of talent, knowledge, and ability” dictated by mandatory retirement ages. Winston also notes that the Tennessee state colleges and universities do not charge tuition to students over the age of 65.
