associate moneyFor some Biglaw associates, there’s nothing more important than meeting their billable hours requirements so they can collect their full bonuses at the end of the year. But for others, there’s nothing more important than giving back to their community. One firm just made performing community service an easier pill to swallow for those who would rather be billing, and a treat for those who were already planning to give up their free time to do so.

Being a good world citizen is a trait that’s valued highly at O’Melveny & Myers, and thanks to a new program, the firm has made it easier for all eligible employees across its 15 global offices to live up to that goal by giving them a paid day off to volunteer. Beginning on July 1, 2017, O’Melveny’s new “Giving Back” program will allow employees to volunteer with a a qualifying nonprofit organization on a cause important to them without having to sacrifice a single cent from their paychecks.

O’Melveny is one of only a few large law firms to have a dedicated Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, which unifies the firm’s community involvement programs, scholarships and mentorships, veteran initiatives, charitable giving, sustainability efforts, and pro bono legal work.

“So many of our corporate clients have these wonderful, dedicated CSR programs that make a real difference in their communities and for their employees,” said Rochelle Karr, director of O’Melveny’s CSR program. “We saw an opportunity to build on the values that O’Melveny holds at its core by patterning our CSR program after our clients’ and working with them on shared causes.”

George C. Demos, the firm’s chief operating officer, said that this day of volunteering “provides opportunities for each of us to make a difference, both locally and globally,” and that the Giving Back program is “consistent with O’Melveny’s values and is inclusive of all the ways we give back, including legal services, volunteerism, and sponsorships.”
