Stat Of The Week: States With A Majority Of Lawyers Not Working As Lawyers

Remarkably, there are eight states (plus Puerto Rico) where 50% or more of active law licenses aren't being used.

stat imageThe estimable Matt Leichter has recently updated his Lawyers Per Capita By State page. Among his comprehensive and data-rich analysis is a look at “Excess Attorneys,” which “attempts to measure the number of licensed attorneys who are not directly employed as lawyers.” Leichter qualifies his findings by noting that the data makes no distinction between “judges, politicians, businesspeople whose careers advanced due to their law degrees” and those who are simply unable (or unwilling) to find work as lawyers.

Remarkably, there are eight states (plus Puerto Rico) where 50% or more of licensed attorneys are not working as lawyers:
