The Best Way To Score A Biglaw Summer Associate Gig? Save A Partner's Life

This hero was rewarded -- generously.

A law student saved the day.

Last month, we shared with you the tale of a heroic law student who came to the aid of a Biglaw partner who was involved in a violent altercation with some local ruffians.

John P. Rowley III, a partner at Baker McKenzie, shattered his hand and sustained cuts and bruises after being pushed into a departing train and kicked and punched by several teens at the Gallery Place Metro station on May 12. Luckily, GW Law student Andrew Miller was just behind Rowley, and ran to his assistance, pulling the teens off of the former federal prosecutor before they could do any more harm. Miller suffered a concussion as a consequence for being a good samaritan. But, this story has a very happy ending for both Rowley and Miller.

At some point after the attack, Rowley began communicating with Miller, and one week after the assault, Miller found himself with an offer he couldn’t refuse. Law.com has more information on what happened next:

Rowley called Miller and offered him a position as a summer associate in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office. Miller … started at the firm on June 12.

“I practiced law for quite a while now and, frankly, natural leaders are hard to find,” Rowley said. “When I met [Miller] and I got to know him a little bit, reflecting back on the courage of jumping in, he was the kind of person that we wanted to have here at the firm this summer.”

Miller was genuinely shocked that Rowley extended an offer to him, but he’s thrilled about working at a firm that was willing to take a chance on someone like him, just because of his unquestionable selflessness and his willingness to step in during an emergency situation when others turned away.

“I’m sure I’ll tell my grandkids about it,” Miller said about his once-in-a-lifetime experience and the resultant job offer. Kindness counts, even in Biglaw.

Congratulations to Andrew Miller on his summer associate job. Something tells us he’ll be getting an offer for full-time employment at the end of the summer.
