Spicer Confirms President Stands With Kasowitz... Start The Countdown To His Firing

It's never safe to have this guy's confidence.

Could this union be heading toward Splitsville?

Rumors have circulated for over a week about tensions between Donald Trump and Marc Kasowitz that have careened toward a breaking point. And that was before Kasowitz’s week from hell. Yesterday, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer fielded a question about Marc Kasowitz and the tempest in a teapot over his aggressive lack of patience with a critic.

“Does the White House and the President still have confidence in Mr. Kasowitz to speak for the administration on this Russian matter?”

“Yes, he does, and I know Mr. Kasowitz has issued an apology in that matter,” Spicer said before moving on.

Stick a fork in him, he’s done. To think, I’d actually argued that Kasowitz’s brusque handling of his online detractor might mend his fences with the president. Alas, it looks like Kasowitz’s time may soon be done.

I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that Spicer’s statement sounds like the exact opposite of an impending break with the Manhattan litigator. Well, only if you’ve not been paying attention.

Because there’s actually no surer sign you’re on your way out the door than receiving a “vote of confidence” from this administration.

“The president has confidence in the director,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters.

That’s what Sean Spicer said when asked about Jim Comey six f**king days before Comey got fired. And that’s got nothing on Kellyanne Conway saying “General Flynn does enjoy the full confidence of the president” hours before he was forced out.

It’s not that the administration has an official “kiss of death” policy of praising someone right before they’re shown the door. Frankly, Spicer probably has no idea he’s sealed Kasowitz’s fate. But to use the Comey situation as an example, Spicer’s relatively benign answer kicked off days of wall-to-wall coverage on cable news of how ridiculous it would be for Trump to keep the dedicated lawman in charge of the FBI. Trump took the hint.

To that end, Kasowitz may well benefit from the demise of the Senate health bill sucking up enough cable bandwidth to keep Spicer’s comment off the radar for a day or two. But eventually, some producer is going to need to fill 20 minutes of airtime and they’ll herd a bunch of talking heads together to explain why Trump should not have confidence in Kasowitz and then it’s just a matter of time until Trump watches it and decides the bobblehead on TV gives better advice than his inner circle and Kasowitz is sent packing.

So let’s start wagering. When does Kasowitz leave the Trump matter?
