The Incredible Growing Presidential Legal Team

Will the name Ty Cobb still be associated with a-holes?

Ty Cobb

Times of trouble, specifically legal trouble, are boon times for lawyers. This weekend the White House announced the personal legal team of the president was getting another Biglaw bump — this time from Hogan Lovells partner Ty Cobb.

According to Bloomberg, Cobb’s role will be one of “traffic cop, enforcer of discipline, and public spokesman — the point person for queries from congressional panels and the Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller. He’ll also work not only with Kasowitz’s team but with outside lawyers hired by others in Trump’s inner circle.” When the president is dealing with multiple investigations less than a year into his term, an enforcer is exactly what is needed, especially when dealing with a legal team that has brought their ownbaggage to the party. Sounds like Cobb will need some of the his namesake’s — who’s also a distant relative — legendary meanness (even if that reputation was unfair) to survive the task.

It’s also interesting that a HoLove attorney is making the switch to Team Trump — according to Law.com, Cobb has submitted his resignation to the firm, but he is currently traveling and he won’t officially leave until the end of July. While big firms usually have lawyers of every political stripe working there, Hogan Lovells is involved in litigation directly opposed to the Trump administration. The firm is repping the state of Hawaii in the battle against the March 6th executive order that bans travel from six Muslim majority countries. And Law.com reports some of Cobb’s soon-to-be-former colleagues aren’t pleased with his new job:

One person affiliated with Hogan Lovells expressed frustration Friday over Cobb’s new assignment, and how it could conflict with the Hawaii case, which names Trump as a party. The conflict would evaporate when Cobb leaves the firm—but that isn’t planned for another two weeks. It is not yet known when Cobb will return from his travels.

Leaving discontentment in his wake? Sounds like Cobb is already ready for his work with Donald Trump.
