Officer Reassures White Lady: 'We Only Kill Black People'

Police are now using their ability to shoot black people to make white people feel better.

A Georgia (Cobb County) police officer was caught on his dashcam footage trying to calm a white motorists who was getting agitated by her traffic stop. He says, caught on tape: “But you’re not black. Remember, we only shoot black people. Yeah, we only kill black people, right?”

Jesus. I don’t even know if I have a “take” here beyond:

The officer, Lt. Greg Abbott (no relation to Texas governor of the same name), claims, through his attorney, that he was just trying to de-escalate the situation. From VOX:

Lt. Greg Abbott is a highly respected 28-year veteran of the Cobb County Police Department. He is cooperating with the department’s internal investigation and will continue to do so. His comments must be observed in their totality to understand their context. He was attempting to de-escalate a situation involving an uncooperative passenger. In context, his comments were clearly aimed at attempting to gain compliance by using the passenger’s own statements and reasoning to avoid making an arrest.

I don’t know that I believe that explanation, because I’m not a slack-jawed organ grinder who just believes cops like a damn fool. But, if I were to believe this statement, it kind of makes things WORSE.

Think about all the things this officer allegedly did for the white lady. He:

  • Attempted to de-escalate the situation;
  • Attempted to gain compliance;
  • Used reasoning in order to avoid making an arrest.

Are you kidding me? Are you freaking kidding me? Would Abbot have attempted to de-escalate and gain compliance to avoid having to arrest an uncooperative black motorist? How STUPID do you have to be at this point to believe that?

Would Abbott have even given a freaked out black motorists the peace of mind to say “I know you think we only kill black people, but I’m not going to kill you.”

No, of course not. If you’re a white lady, the cops will “joke” (allegedly) about only killing black people, if you are a black person the cops AREN’T JOKING.

This country is sick. Its police are sick. I’m running out of other cheeks to turn.
