Law School Dean Enters Politics, But What About The School?

What are your thoughts?

It’s a lot of work to be a law school dean. There is the constant pressure to scale the law school ranks, make sure grads can pass the bar exam, and oh, yeah, get your graduates jobs. There’s a ton of balls to keep in the air, and so it’d be understandable if side interests fell to the wayside.

But Pace Law School’s dean, David Yassky, is going a different route. Sure, there may be budgets to balance, professors to hire, and a brand new academic year ahead of him, but he’s adding politics to his plate. He’s seeking a seat in the New York state senate.

The interesting part is that Above the Law tipsters are saying most of Pace Law School community found out not from a statement from the dean, but when they saw this video:

Perhaps Dean Yassky just felt called to public service in this tumultuous time, and he does have a background in politics. But from the emails we are getting, it seems people are annoyed at the prospect:

I guess Mr. Yassky doesn’t think that Pace Law School deserves his full-time attention, or that anyone might care that all the time he spends making the case that he should be picked for the vacant seat by party bosses is time he could spend on improving things at the Law School. Students are furious.

Are you a member of the Pace Law School community? What do you think about Dean Yassky’s political ambitions? Feel free to sound off by email, by text message (646-820-8477), or by tweet (@ATLblog). A fun or insightful response — we’ll keep you anonymous — could find its way into an update to this story.
