Why Contract Management Is Sexy: A Conversation With Seal Software's Ulf Zetterberg

Seal Software is a great example of a company with some sexy customers.

Seal Software 007One of the biggest challenges for start-up companies, and this is not just in legal technology space, is to market to big companies. There are a lot of good reasons for a start-up to get big name customers: they have budgets, they tend to be repeat customers, and (perhaps most important of all) it sends a signal to everyone else in the market that your company should be taken seriously. But, big companies are typically hesitant to do business with smaller teams with unproven records, and rightly so.

It’s why when I speak to companies, one of the first questions I always ask is, “Who are some of your sexiest customers?” Seal Software (although no longer small or unproven) is a great example of a company with some sexy customers.

So what does Seal do and why have you law firm attorneys not heard of them if they’re so sexy? Companies have loads of contracts floating around on their servers and in the cloud, they’re not always easy to find and they take a lot of time to review. If you’ve ever worked on setting up a data room for a M&A deal, you know that simply finding, never mind reviewing can be a long, drawn out process (and M&A is but one small example). That’s where Seal comes in. Their software not only searches your company’s system and locates the contracts, but it can also tell you what they say and help you analyze whether or not certain agreements have regulatory issues that need to be addressed. If you’re working at a firm you probably haven’t used Seal (it would save your clients way too much money) because they market primarily to corporate legal departments (which, unlike your firms, like to save money).

I wanted to know more about Seal’s CEO and founder Ulf Zetterberg and the story behind the company, so Ulf is joining me on ATL for a little back and forth.
