I think the court would have preferred to know, and might have felt somewhat misled if anyone went to read the note. I would have identified myself.

— Douglas Laycock, a professor at the University of Virginia School of Law, reflecting on Ted Cruz’s penchant for citing himself in briefs to the Supreme Court. In two cases dealing with religious freedom, Cruz cited his own student note about animal sacrifice published in a conservative law journal at Harvard Law. He also played fast and loose with The Bluebook rules when he did so, as he failed to list himself as the author of the note either time he cited his own work. Guess he didn’t want the Supreme Court to realize he is a shameless self-promoter.
