The New Design: Whaddya Think? (And please report bugs.)
ATL readers are a tough crowd, so we expect a lot of complaining. That's fine; we wouldn't have it any other way.
We'd also like your help. The new site will have all sorts of technical glitches, bugs, etc. For example, right now, blockquotes are not displaying properly.
In this thread, please bring glitches, bugs, and other weird site behavior to our attention. The sooner we know about the problems, the sooner we can fix them.
Thanks!

Your RSS feed in google reader blew up with updates from fashionista.com. Very annoying.
The site loads slowly for me.
The photos next to each post are stupid.
The Law & Order style title is awesome and inviting, much like the stacks in the library wrap me in their cold embrace.
*That's* the feeling I was trying to get at. This site looks cold and unfeeling.
But it's pretty cool either way...
The serifs on the font used in the header for "Above the Law" are probably the most annoying serifs I have ever viewed, since it can't decide if it wants to be a serif or not and settles on some horrible blocky middle ground.
Change the font. This one incites me to rage.
Two bugs:
Bug 1: The layout went from normal to "hey mom check out my sweet blog" today. Lame.
Bug 2: Lat refers to himself as "we" and that is just plain stupid.
it's about time for this update!
kind of looks a little generic. jazz it up lat!
So, what's the deal with profiles and stuff? Does this mean that only one person will actually be able to post as Loyola2L or Frat Stud?
Heaven Forbid!
The default avatar for guest comments really should not be that weird obscured-dude-in-a-suit pic. Want to push away all your female readers?
I'm usually a fan of white space in designs, but there's too much of it on the comments pages. Can you condense them somehow? They don't need to be so spread out.
Why is the default picture a guy?
Why did you change it? This new design blows
to expand on my last point -- the humor came from one-off pairings of comments w/ names.
examples:
--variations of people parodying the "frat stud" comment, but changing it "xyz Stud"
-- say you have a post describing the amount of time wasted online at work, there might be comments like "get back to work" left by "Your Assigning Partner"
the ability to have a one-off name also worked well for providing info about the speaker. take a post about a law school or prominent person, say a new SCOTUS clerk. those posts would often have comments by "xyz school 1/2/3L" or "school/name-of-clerk sectionmate" etc
nobody wants to register for a one-off post, and the options of registering or posting simply as guest will decrease your comments...
oops, wrong thread
People seem to like the old ATL logo and hate the shadowy, faceless dude as the default icon - why not substitute the logo?
Default icon sucks sexist balls.
Why not have a selection of somewhat humorous lawyer-y icons (both M and F) for people to choose from?
Generic template. Motif too dark. In general, it just doesn't stand out in any way. Also using bold for quotes sucks.
there's way too much white space. something about this site is very not pleasing to the eye. red is an angry color and white is like the MS word documents we stare at all day. can we can color options?
I like the Community section. The new font/format hurts my eyes.
Most importantly, i haven't encountered such a painfully slow-loading site since 1996. Why is this new format SO SLOW??!?
i really, really hate the stupid shadowy faceless dude as the default commenter icon.
not posting/visiting until it's changed.
this site looks retarded. the old one had personality. i can't say that i'll stop coming here, but my interest in ATL will certainly take some toll.
The "community" needs some guidance. The first few links prove it's just being trolled.
PLEASE remove the icons to the left of the posts; incredibly annoying and ridiculous. It's almost painful to read through the comments...
Blockquotes not displaying right isn't a glitch, it's an oversight. There's no CSS applying style to the element. It's seriously a matter of adding something like this to your main CSS file:
blockquote{
margin: 15px 25px;
background-color: #3D3D3D;
color: #ccc;
letter-spacing: .5px;
}
That should take whoever is doing the design for this site 30 seconds top to design. 20 seconds if they're competent.
Note, that is not a suggested style...as it'd look like shit.
I've tried about 10 different ways to post an avatar icon. WTF, Lat? I'm gonna banish you to a Charlotte law firm if this shit doesn't get sorted out.
bring back the old Logo, and the avatar icons are just awful. and the fonts are too blocky. i agree w/all the above.
Agree with other posters that the content should go back to the righthand side. Do this, please. The eye naturally gravitates to right; that's why the most valuable space in newspapers is on the upper right.
I agree with the previous comment writer ("guest") that one-off comment names will be sorely missed. Another advantage, is that one could identify oneself as a previous commenter.
I think the ability to sign a name in the text of the comment is not nearly as funny as actually pretending to be that person.

well, as of the new web design, i'm officially out of here... peace. hope the remnants enjoy the crappy design... good job lat, proving you should never again be trusted to handle more than $20 at a time.
The font is WAY too light.
It's like an old thermal paper fax that you find during document production and have to use a magnifying glass to make out the fading words.
Lat - the current "community" format remains amateurish.
I suggest moving towards a true message board with selected mods using the vBulletin software.
use vBulletin
the color red is NOT aesthetically pleasing what-so-ever...i would get rid of red in favor of green or blue
I like how you fixed the background color, the quote color and made it easier for a blackberry to load.
I concur with others that dropping the image icons would be nice- maybe leave a way for people add them but get rid of default ones.
And the red hyperlink isn't quite as nice as blue would be, I don't think.
Oh, and I just submitted a comment and it appeared to have taken but now it's not displayed on the page. What gives?
also, the "comment policy" link just brought me to the top of the page.
The font used for the posts and the comments is really hard to read; it's too narrow. please change it.
the font works on some browsers but not others. on firefox, it's really hard to read. very narrow and squished together. i agree with the post above, it looks like a bad fax.
Okay, so replacing the man head with the devil judge head is brilliant and wonderful. THANK YOU FOR FIXING TWO PROBLEMS WITH ONE BLOW!!!
BLOW STUD
vBulletin sucks, don't use it.
The community section should be in more of a traditional message board format. The way it is now, topics are prone to get bumped off the front page easily.
I like the new icon more than the old one but I would prefer not to have any because, as someone mentioned earlier, I like to at least pretend to be working and having all these icons on the page when I'm scrolling through the comments takes that illusion away (anyone glacing at my computer screen knows I'm reading ATL).
For me, the thing I miss most is having the full blogroll on the front page. I often came to ATL to find the other blogs I like and now b/c only the alphabetically top 10 are listed or so, it makes it a pain to get the rest of the blogroll.
Of course, it's bad b/c Prawfs.com is not listed either on the front page...
Thanks David.
Dan
i love the devil judge instead of silhouetted suitman!!!
how about a box like the past precedent box that shows the most active community threads. i don't really feel like clicking over here to check it out when nothing is new.
also, the little judge icon has always looked like a penguin in my address bar. and i always wonder what the hell site i was visiting about penguins.
Your community section needs serious re-working. Threads should appear in the order in which they were last updated, and comments should count. That way, old but live threads appear on the front, as do new threads.
And when you try to access old threads, there is this wierd previous/next choice, and you need to chose "previous" not "next" to get to the next page and it's counter-intuitive. Also, having a new page for each day takes too much time to scroll through. You should have a number of old posts appear on a page at a time (with only their titles).
Or (ideally) you could create a real message board (think Auto Admit, but with more class!) ;D
This new site is not Iphone compatible - pain in the ass. How about ATL for mobile devices?
